ELLESMERE RUGBY SUB- •'' s UNION.

Tlie Ellesmere Rugby Sub-union met at Leeston on Friday night. Present—Messrs R. T. McMillan (president), P. Delargey, S. J. Wiekliffe (Southbridge), E. G. Wright, W. A. McMillan (Dunsandel), A. W. Scott, J. E. L. Baldwin (College).

The president said he had called the meeting mainly for the - pui\ pose of getting" suggestions from the/delegates that would be in the interests of .football during the comiijg season. They could discuss the question of insurance, the\forming• of a referee's association 0 and any bther matters the delegates might wish to bring up. • In answer to a question, the .^president said he had enquired of the C.R.U. last season as to whether theyvwould "take Ellesmere under their wing" in regard "to accidtinVinsurance*'.but although'a de- •* finite reply had been promised, it had not been received. He had hoped to see the president of the C.K.U.. last Wednesday, but had not been able to do so. They would

It was desirable to have various matters discussed before the annual meetings of clubs. \ '-. Mr Delar gey said that the most satisfactpry method would be to collect a stated sum from • each club according lo whether it. had oi>e or two teams. Each club might have perhaps 30 men;insured. The funds could-be given out by grants according to the merits of the case; as was done- in eon- _ nexioil with racing. There were some piaxers who did not need any " financial assistance, but others eoiud not affof'd jto be idle and pay doctors' and other expenses. He djkl not think it would be pos" sible to make 5a grant 'to each player of so" much per week, nor did he think tne'C.R.TJ. would take Ellesmere under their, wing in respect to insurance. , ( The president said he thought the suggestion a good one. Mr "Wright seconded the motion. The. opinion of members was in favour of making the payment' of the insurance fee compulsory. The motion was carried. Mr. Scott enquired if the union intended taprovide aiiy rule books / for the benefit of referees and junior players. The junior players needed something to guide them. /He strongly recommended -that ' rule books be provided if possible. Jlis own expedience showed the need for rule books for the guid-j ance of players and others. , The president said the union had ' practically. agreed towards the close of last season to .'have rule! books printed, but as the . season! was nearly through it was thought advisable to leave the matter over until early this season. The matter would be considered at the annual meeting of the union. The question, of-forming a referees' association was next discussed. The president said he thought it- would' be a very good thing to , have such an association, and to 'have the N referees meeting together. McMillan and- Scott, a resolutipn Was carried affirming the desirability of forming a referees' association in the sub-union district, and it was decided that the secretary should call a meeting of re- - fcrees for that purpose on * the .same dale as the annual meeting oi the union..; ■ ... It was decided to hold the "annual meeting of the sub-union on April 4, at 7.30 p.m. '
