DROW ING FATALITY.
— > -♦ .. :.■ ' :.-. • • ; On Tuesday last a sad drowning accident occurred on Lake Ellesmere resulting m the death of a' man named John Samuel Taylor; a new arrival m the colony. In company with the Maori John Walker, better known as? Shark/ Taylor went up the Lake towards Kaitqna, looking for swan's eggs. When opposi'e White's old timber yard, about ten miles from Taumutu, and about a mile and a half from shore, a suiden squall upset tbe boat. Taylor was unable to swim, but Shark, who is a splendid swimmer, succeeded m righting t|e boat, 1 which, however, they r were then unable to bail out. He assisted Taylor to get off bis gam boots, and did all he could for him ; he trie'l to persuade him to trust to a paddle and try. to get'ashibre, but . Taylor ref used,"} and persisted m clingin? to the stern pfthe boat A wind, was blowing, and a short choppy sea on. Shark then .determined to make for the shore, and after again vainly trying to induce Taylor to aeconi pkny him^ he set out and m about two hours succeeded m reaching land.- When about thirty yards from the boat, be looked back, but could not see Taylor, who,. he surmises, was washed off the boat by the sea. Taylor appears from papers found m his effects to have been , a sailor. He was about thirty years of age, and an Englishman. He came out m the Coptic to Lyttelton on her last, voyage, and m the' beginning of last' month came to the Lake where he was, employed by Dimitri, the Bsherman. Only a few days ago he started to work frr Charles Coleman. ■■■>■• ; The police searched for the body on Wednesday without success ; the boat capsized m some fourteen feet of water and the bottom is covered with stumps? so: that dragging was impossible It. will probably be washed aihore shortly.
