ed to a youner man named Rolwrfc Campbell, nn employee of tho Melbourne Telegraph Offi'-e. Campbell and othprs wore on 1 " shoo 1 ing and sketching on the Yarra flats and amongst the firearms of the party was a muzzle loading pistol of flip olii fashioned tyne. This s'ranee blunderbuss was used by Campbell, and wliile ho was m the aofc of loading it, usinur nn iron ramrod 3-lGths of an inch m thickness, fo stamp the charge, it exploded, and the ramrod was driven through tho young man's brain. The poiufi entered the cheek just below the right «ye, and taking an upward course passed through the eye, and the brain, and protruded 7^in out of the top of the sku'l. Although injured so terribly Campbell lost neither his consciousness nor his nerve, and walking up to on 3of his companions asked him to pull out tho mmmd. This tho friend deemed inndvisable (o nltompf, an 1 setting off for n place ciHel Oampbirwell they consulted a doctor there, wl»o advised them to go ab once to the Melbourne Hospital. This advice vms acted upon nnd at tliref o'cloc'c m the afternoon, five hours after the accident, Campbell stood m the casualty 100 mo p the hospi tul with tho ramrol still sticking out of the top of his skull* He was even the • conscious, and able to walk about firmly and without assisfc-mce. The operation of trepanning was performe 1 with every success and the ramrod removed. Campbell still lives', but there are grave doubts of his recovery.
