SOUTHBRIDGE TOWN BOAUD.
To the Editor. Sir, — The civic fatheis of South bridge, at a meeting held on the Bth j inst. appear to have beeu somewhat confused and mazy m their ideas as to what ' course of procedure should be adopted with rogard to two applications made to the Board. The first question, an application for a refund of rates by the Wesleyan Oliurch Trustees was a very simple mat ter, said rates having been collected on property not ratable by law. The Board ! having no power to receive such rates, how can it have the power to retain that which is the result oE clerical error, and m direct contravention of statute law. The Board's decision is simply amus intr — bordering on the ludicrous — ami while it displays a lack of general knowledge, it indicates financial fervour of a very pronounced type. The other application is of importance too, as showing the xoarped morale and questionable trend of one individual towatds repudiation. The demand of the County Council for the Board's share of licensing expenses, heing a legal and proper claim, ought to b 3 paid at once ot arranged foi without the slightest hesitation on the part of any man, to say nothing of one of our public men. But oh ! Shades of St Patrick ! we are going to try the good old plan, ' that they shall take who have the power, and they may keep who «an.' Yours, etc., Observer.
