{From our Own Correspondent.) TEMPERANCE SOCIETY. The usual monthly meeting of the Star of Honour Temperance Society was held on Friday evening last m the Public School. The attendance was unusually larger— the room being crowded — as a programme of special merit had been prepared. Tho meeting was pre sided over by the President (Mr P. Campbell.) The proceedings ' were opened m due form. The various members taking part m the programme acquitted themselves m a manner to elicit the applause ot all present. One item especially — a dialogue given by four of the members — so amused the audience that it was redemanded. It is satisfactory to note that theso social gatherings are so much appreciated by the young people of the distriot and deserve to be encouraged. THE CROPS. The splendid weather we ara now I having has enabled the farmers to get their ploughing well forward. A large area of wheat is being put m, Mr M, Jones has a splendid crop of winter wheat looking splendid, its equal is not to be seen m the distriot. He has also a prolific crop of Simon's Sno wfl ake potatoes, some of which are of unusual size and are perfect models of what potatoes should be ; round both ends, smooth skins, and shallow eyes. MrT . Tolerton has a heavy yield of potatoes, chiefly Dement-*, of excellent quality, and thus heaps up his reputation as a grower of this most useful tuber. Grass
