THE REGISTRAR'S OFFICE.
A letter published m our last issue draws a reply from tbe Chairman of tbe Town Board, which should satisfy tbe
minds of those people who objecte I to the transference of th* Registrar's om*c« to Lees ton. It iit not intended that Mia narrow limits of the Town Board's dis triet should be the bounds of tbe new Registrar's authority. Wu«t is desired and probably what will be obtained, is that the office m Southbridge should be equal to toat m Leeston, and that people residing m the Ellesmere district generally shall be able to register Birtus, M aariages, and Deaths m either offico at their free option. The absurdity of confining the district to tue town is manifest ; there wool I be scarcely a dozen entries m the books during tho year. On the other hand, it would be a
cause of grave inconvenience to people dwelling a*-, say the Rakaia end of h* district, to drive through Southb id<e
m order to register at Leeaton, as it nould to Dojlrston people to come to Southbridge. The proposed plan would m no way interfere with the Accuracy of the returns, and would aid very considerably to the conrenience of the public. We understand thnt the petition ia being influential ly signed. The sooner it is .finished and forwarder, tbe earlier will the existing awkward state of affairs be endeJ, so that it behove? ratepayers to inscribe their names as speedily as
possible
