His per- ! formances lately has been so good that he | will be woh /mcked for anything that he goes for. - - - . A slight accident occurred m the procesßion of the funeral of Mr C. E, Holley yesterday. When the funeral was proceeding on its way to the gravoyard Mr T. Frankislfs horse, which was ia a trap, suddenly stopped, swerved, and fell. Tiie result wus that one of the shafts was slightly damaged, but the horse escaped uuhurt. It is with deep regret that we havo to record the death of Mr C. E. Holley, tho youngest son o£ Mr Win, Holley, of Leeston, which occurred on Sunday last, after a short illness, of blooil-poisoning. He was hold m high esteem by all who knew him, and was a great favourite. He died at the early age of 19. The funeral took place yesterday, and was attended by a largo following, about 75 vehicles and so horsemen being present. The Leeston Football Club presented Mr Henry McDonald, of Leeston, with a travelling- bag and gentleman's companion on Friday last. A very pleasant evening was spent, the usual toasts and a number of good songs and speeches being given by the Club members. Three of the Vicepresidents—Messrs F. Jameson, R. SCock, and Dr Gosset — were present. John Henry Lswis, alias Frederick Blythe, and Joha Williams, alias Allen, were charged at Invercargili, on January 27, on remand,, with escapiog from custody at Milford Sound. At the close of tho evidence for the. prosecution, Lewis, m reply to the usual question, said : — "All I havo to say is, that the authorities over us were innch to blame for my escape, knowing I had made a previous attempt a short time before at Lyttelton, Only one warder waß looking after the prisoners I was with at the time, and he had no uniform and no arras whatever. The place waa quite open for any prisoner to eßcape without any attempt being made to stop him," Allen reserved hia statement. Both prisoners wore committed for trial at the Supreme Court, opening ou Feb. 10. Lena Loe, a Jittle girl, was charged, on remand, with the larcetiy of a box of fi^s, value 6d, the property of Thomas Taylor, on January 12th. Inspector Pender said that, from what the detectives had lea rned, the child was pilfering, and had been watched and caught iv the act, The parents of the child had received a term ol imprisonment for cruelty to the child at Leeston some time ago, and apparently the child was not being brought up m the right way. The Bench asked if "it was intended to apply to have the child sent toßurnham. Mr Pen der said he hardly what to do m the case. MrCr esswoll Baid the child had a good home, and had never committed any theft exstpt this one under notice. Chief- Djteutivo O'Connor gave evidence regarding to* case, The Bench .saib the best plan woml be to keep an eye on the child, and it shu was caught m anything of the kiak again she would bo sent at once to B urnham. The mother of the child who was m the court, was cautioned as to the management of her daughter.
