A BRAVE STEWARDESS.
The steamer Tasso, one of the Hull Wilson liners, while proceeding from Bergen to Stravanger, witli passengers ami general cargo, struck during a heavysnowstorm on a rock on the Norwegian coast. It was night time when the accident occurred, and there being among the passengers several ladies, considerable alarm prevailed. At the time of the casualty the majority of the passengers were in bed, and so alarmed were some of them that Mrs Hansen, the stewardess, had to stand by them till they were dressed. Upon the steamer striking the rock she fell to leeward, and the captain a"d crew proceeded to 1 much the boats. Some difficulty was experienced in getting one of the boats clear, when Mrs Hansen in the bravest manner mounted the saloon bridge, and creeping along assisted the . captain and second mate in clearing the ropes from the top of the davits—they being at one end of the davits and Mrs Hansen at the other. Tne boat was launched, but in doing so it got slightly stove, and it became leaky. The work of conveying the passengers to the shore occupied considerable time. Mrs Hansen was in the bo.it during the the whole of the time, baling the water so as to keep the boat clear. The whole of the passengers were safely landed by this means. Mrs Hansen, owing to being in the boat for such a lenglit of time, suffered from cold and exposure. For her brave conduct she was highly complimented by the captain and the passengers. Mrs Hansen is a young married woman, and is of a pleasant, cheerful disposition. She says that (lin ing the whole affair she entertained no fear whatever, and would ho ready to do the like again should the occasion require.
