There is in the reporters’ gallery of the House of Commons (says the London correspondent of the Newcastle Leader) a veteran journalist of strong opinions and outspoken language, who-e comments on the proceedings going on beneath him are sometimes made in tones which can hardly fail to leach the ears of members below. An amnsing incident was thus c nised in the early hours on Wednesday morning during Mr Sexton’s speech on ihe Belfast disturbances Bill. The hon. gentleman was complaining of the measure being taken at I o'clock in the morning, when a gruff voice from the press gallery retorted, “You should have blocked it.” Mr Sexton unlike most of these sitting around him, failed to detect whence the eruption came; but assuming that it orignated on the Ministerial benches he o'-served, “ An honf.member opposite says we should have blocked it,” and proceeded elaborately to explain why that course had not been taken. The remainder of his speech was free from audible interruption. A gentleman at Milton has been in communication with the Colonial Treasurer regarding a scheme for obtaining the gold out of the bed of the Molyneux. ITo proposes, by the erection of dams at the Kawarau falls and the source of the Molyneux, to prevent the water leaving the lakes for a period of say one month at a time. This wou'd leave the bed of the river comparatively dry and workable by ordinary appliances. His scheme he urges, is quite practicable, bat of such s nature that it could only be undertaken by the Government of the country. The scheme has been submitted hy Sir Julius Vogel to the Minuter of Mines kit faia boninderatww.
