A clever and audacious forgery of i cheque for a large amount is reported fron r Christohurch. On Tuesday evening a bo; " called at Messrs Ballantyno and Co.' s drapers' shop and said he had been sent b; s a gentleman who wanted a chcquo fo 3 L2 7s in exchange for caih, as the pos 3 office was closed and ho wanted to send th '" amount to a person in Wellington" Th request was complied witb, and nothin '' moie thought about tho transaction. Sul • sequently, a cheque for L7G, signed by B.V lantyno and Co., was presented at th * National Bauk and ca«hcd. On enquiry ir was found to bo a forgery, and tho suppov C- tion wjs that tho chequo for L2 7s was ol n tained for the purpose of copying the sii;m it tnre of the firm, which '-as remarkably \v. j imitated. Tho ease was placed in ty hands of Detective O'Connor, who went i ,0 work with a creat deal of cleverness an id I astuteness. The result wnn that he arrest; j a a man named Jonathan Roberts, former! a clerk in tho Bank of New Zealand i le TimTn and afterwards in Chrisrchurc w L 64 in National Bmk notes were found » pocket of Roberto' coat tfs his lodging.
