A GOOD STORY ABOUT THE QUEEN.
There is a good story told about Queen Victoria, when she -was young and kiitenny. It seems she went to the theatre to see that old favourite farce, ‘ Box and Cox,’ and at one part of the performance laughed ‘ right out’ loud in meeting ’ It was where Box gets his fingers greasy by handling the shop left bv Cox on the gridiron, and Box wiped his hand in the most natu« ral manner on the bosom of his pants. Victoria had led rather a secluded life previously, and had never before witnessed that style of cleaning the hands, nor had she ever seen a match lighted in said locality, hence her mirth, •which was contagious, and ‘brought down the house,’ making the actor, Buckstoae, the hero of the time. It
is our impression he was knighted, and adopted a gridiron couchant crossed by a chop rampant as bis coat of arms; but this may be an error. After re* turning to the Royal Palace, the young Queen had a whoh* bushel more of telling Prince Albert, sen,, about the affair, and fairly scandalised that staid party by acting the thing out. He reproved her several times and called her attention to the fact that the Queen ol England should always conduct herself in a seemly manner, especially when strangers were present, to which she replied that, strangers or no strangers, she was going to giggle all she wanted to, and * you’d a laughed yourself if you’d a’seen it.’ Always after that, up to the time that Prince Albert died, whenever he became a little obstinate or arbitrary towards her before folks, all she had to do to subdue him was to make a motion as if reaching for her pistol pocket. This will not be found in any memoirs of the Prince, but no doubt the Queen has it all down in black and white, and it will be given to the world when she lays down lif’s burden.
