It was resolved to award 10 Senior and 7 Junior Scholarships this year. Kate Kelly was committed for trial yesterday at Lyttelton for manslaughter of her husband.
Mr G. A Dibbs has resigned Colonial Secretaryship of New South Wales. The rainfall in Dunedin for last 18 days is over 17 inches. Parliament was prorogued in dire form yesterday afternoon. ' •• The Taieri has been quite' flooded, though the river itself has kept within the channel.
On the flat in Dunedin the ground is completely covered with water. Several slips have occurred in town, and in one or two cases heavy damage done to buildings. Business quite at a standstill, and nobody out excepting those compelled to be.
Old residents here say they never knew such continuous and heavyrain.
To day it has rained slightly, hut to night stars are shining and an improvement is evidently near. It does not seem to have extended inland any distance, or further south than the Taieri, and Timaru on the north. London, August 18

The Colonial and Indian visitors now in I)ublin were entertained at a ball at the Mansion House last night. The Hall was brilliantly decorated with digs; those of nearly all the nations •ei ig displayed ; but not a single British flag was hung anywheie in the building. The P. and O. Company deny the statement that they-intend to establish a regular line between Antwerp and. Australia Gaudaur has arrived here to take part in the approaching, sculling sweepstakes. Negotiations are pro* ceeding for a match between him and Beach for the championship 'of the world .
It is announced officially that the Government have not decided upon the immediate -withdrawal of the Frontier Commission, but that negotiations will continue with the Russian Governs ment. It is intended the Commission shall return to India for tho Autumn.
Calcutta, August 17.
It is announced from Simla that the British Commission will return to India next month via Cabul.
