At the Land Board yesterday it was resolved to recommend the Government to set apart Section 54, Block 3, Lauder, for sale on deferred payments at 25s j and section 40, 47, 60, 52, and 53 for Perpetual Leasing (capital value 20s); also resolved to, reduce capital value of sections belonging to M. C. Macdonald to 20s, Plans ’of road lines on which the Vincent Council propose to expend L 157, accruing from deferred payment sales, were approved.
Auckland won football match against Wellington yesterday by four points to two. The Rimntaka, from Plymouth, arrived in port toaday alter a passage of less than 40 days.
A public meeting was held yester day in Sydney to consider the ques tion of holding an Exhibition in celebration of the centenary of the colony. A series of resolutions were pro posed and adopted in favor of holding a centennial exhibition in Sydney in 1888.
Another large fire occurred in Auckland last night. The fire raged for two hours. Nine shops and buildings attached were destroyed and three of them were on the opposite side of the street. The insurance amounted to over L4OOO This morning Clark was arrested by the police and charged with arson. At his lodgings L2OO worth of stock was dis covered. It is said that his insurance policy expired to day The Victorian Assembly yesterday increased the duty on woollen goods to 20 per cent. Looton, August 10. Kemp has retired from the sculling championship on the 30th inst. The cricket match, Australians v. Warickshire, had to be abandoned owing to heavy rain falling. The Protestant population of Bel fast are furious at the partisanshipshown by the police during the riots. The hospitals are full of wounded men, women and children.
August 11. The police have been partly withdrawn from Belfast and replaced by soldiers, who are much more popular with the inhabitants. At the funeral of one of the victims of the Belfast riots a disturbance occurred which necessitated the intervention of the police, who arrested 12 persons, amd subsequently dispersed the gathering. The town itself is otherwise in a quieter state.
The isolated action of Russia is much commented on.
Germany and England are urging China to resist the Russian occupation of Port Lazareff.
The “ Republique Francaise” insists on France xetaining the New Hebrides by right of first occupation The “Standard,” referring to the same question, considers that it is time France evacuated.
