A singular illustration of the fact that such a common and even scriptural saying as “The former times were better than these” is not always applicable is furnished by a little bit of his own experience! recently retailed by a well-known and fairly prosperous Tokomairiro settler. When a lad iu Scotland, ho was sent up to tbo “ big house” with a message. As he came away, the housekeeper presented him with a beautiful sandwich. Being rather chary of partaking of unfamiliar food, ha hid it until out of sight of tho house, when he proceeded to examine the prize. The bread and butter on the outside were all right, but what in the world tho mysterious substance between them was ho could not imagine, whilo tho yellow stuff with which it was covered was equally unknown. Ho very carefully deposited the middle portion in a thick edge, and cut away with his kuife several pieces of tho bread which were stained therewith, and thankfully cat the remainder. Upon reaching home he explained his experience, whereupon his elders informed him that I what ho had thrown away was beef saud- ! wich. Wo need not say that ho does not I throw away beef sandwiches now, plentiful though they may be with him.
