A hlrs I’earce, of Caversham, yesterday was awarded LIOO damages against the Corporation for injuries sustained by falling over a pipe left in street by Corporation workmen. The Premier addressed a meeting at Napier last evening, when he mentioned that Government would meet Parliament with a surplus of L 37,000 The census returns yet published show Invercargill to be on the increase, and Oamaru a considerable falling off. No particulars yet published of Dunedin. The Government Insurance Association yesterday discussed the question of the reconstruction of the Board. Three propositions were submitted, Messrs Bell and Reid’s proposal was to hand back the control to the- Government—Mr Grahams’ and Sir Julius Vogel’s proposal provided for three elected members and tlnee official members—Messrs Fisher and Shannon’s proposal provided for the management by a Board of wholly elective members, or a predominant elective power being secured to policy holders. The discussion was adjourned Immediately after the annual meetin?, policy-holders throughout the Colouy are to be asked to vote by proxy upon these three propositions. The question of relieving those who suffered through the wreck of tho Taiaroa is being generally taken up in other parts of the Colony. A concert at Wellington last night produced L2OO.
John McCormack, miner, at Blue Spur, met with a severe accident by a fall of earth in a claim to-day. He ia badly hurt. !
The hull of the Taiaroa is broken in two, and is breaking to pieces fast. The cargo and wreckage ia washing ashore.
A syndicate has been formed in London for carrying out the Lawyer’s Head Canal scheme. If a bill can be carried through this session the work will be commenced forthwith.
