EXTRAORDINARY CONDUCT OF A PROYOST-MARSHALL.
The ‘ Times’s’ Mandalay correspondent says:—“A Human who was suspected of being connected with a conspiracy was placed among the corpses of live dakeits who had just been executed. The Provost-marshall then threatened the man with instant death by shooting if he did, not confess all he knew of the supposed conspiracy, in which certain Burmese Ministers were alleged to be implicated, A squad of soldiers were drawn up in line, and presented their rifles at the man. This frightened him into making a confession, in which he implicated several of the Burmese Ministers. His teszi* raony was written in a book borrowed from a newspaper correspondent, and was taken to Mr Bernard, the British Chief Commissioner, who, after hearing the circumstances under whicu it had been given, indignantly refused to receive it. Colonel Staden, the British Police Inspector, has made a report of the affair to the chief military officers ”
Lord Randolph Churchill was asked iu the House of Commons on Jo.uu.ay 22 what truth there was in tho * Times’ cnnespondeut’s story. He replied that ho was unable to believe that tho Provost-marshall had been guilty of the monstrous and inhuman conduct with which the correspondent charged him. He said he had ordered an immediate inquiry to be marie into tiie, facts ,of the case. It the story proved to be true, exemplary punish'* incut would be meted out to the Provost-marshal.
