PUBLIC MEETING.
.RELIEF TO CROWN TENANTS,
A public meeting, convened by Mr J. , Crummy,, was held in tne Sohonlhouse, Ophir, on Thursday evening last, the 28th February. Mr John Pitches, member of tho Vincent ■County Council, was voted to tho chair. We were unable to be present at the meeting, and no report of the proceedings having reached ns, we are not in a position to give the views expressed. We are given to understand, however, that the meeting was well attended, and the very general -opinion was that reliet in some one form or another should be afforded the Crown tenants at this particular juncture. The following resolutions, as passed, were handed to us ;
Moved by Mr Drumtny, and seconded by Mrßurren - “That this meeting is of opinion that some relief should be given the Crown tenants, owing to the failure of the crops and in a great many instances to the high rents paid for their holdings, together with the general depression.” Moved by Mr Barrington, and seconded by Mr Barren—“ That a petition be drawn up, setting forth the relief sought, and forwarded to the House of Representatives through our member, Vincent Pyke, Esq.” i Moved by Mr Collings, and seconded by "■Mr Sloan—“ That a committee of right, with power to add to their number, be elected to carry out tho object, and that each agricultural centre be communicated with, asking their co-operation.” The following Committee were elected Messas Fitches, Harrington, Burren, Lee, Nagloj, Noon, Jenkins, and Drummy.
