Diseased Nature ottenumes breaks forth in strange eruptions."—A.ct iii, Scene 1. TO THE PUBLIC. SOME patients suffering from nervous affections are afraid from sheer bashfulness and modesty to peusoNAtiiY consult a medical man—other patients have not the self possession and coolness when in the consulting room, toacouratelydescribe their symptoms—their habits of life, and the nature of the disease they suffer Lorn. Let such persons (he or she) sit quietly down in the privacy of their own apartments, and with calm minds describe clearly each symptom of their case, « dear statement Unis written, and laid before me is far preferable in NFUvoUS diseases to a personal consultation Where, however, a disease is of a peculiar and exceptional character, a personal consultation may become necessary; but rcy success in co respondence is so great, that of the thousands upon thousands whom i have treated by letter during the last 32 years, not a single mistake has ever occurred, not a case has ever been made public—in fact, the very simplicity of my system of correspondence prevents publicity. At the same time medicines are sent to my patients in such a tom as to defy detection. How many thousands have I not brough f joy to 1 How many have been enabled to enter into the maariage state through consulting me ?
How many after marriage have pvi vately consulted me and been bless'd, and their married lives made fruitful and liappy. How many wasted ruined youths of I both sexes have also been r stored to health, and thanked their manhood, for hving c«..B.i.i“d mo ..y ! tier. How many questions arise where the family physician is unable to untavd the case, and where often the j patient lingers on, not daring to toil his family medical adviser the nature of his complaint, until consumption wasting, or mental diseases sot in, and j the sufferer gets beyond the curabi j stage, and is left a hopeless Wr. ok. A letter written in the privacy of i the room and dropped into the post [ box reaches me quietly ; the answer is j teturned as quietly and unostenta* tiously, and the patient, without step- j ping from his ch tmber. except to post I his letter, is by return of post put in j full possession of the n» cure of ids case His hopes are raised, his doubts removed, aud he is comparatively a new man ; iu fact, in many c-ses, a new being altogether. The only addition to the ordinary written letter is (lie age, occupation, habits and symptoms, nothing more, i Ihe usual consultation fee of LI (one pound) must be enc osed, otherwise no answer will be teturned. There are thousands of cases in daily life where a consultation with one at a distance, will remove by a single letter, a great fear, a great care, and it often selves what appears as an impenetrable mystery. Jhuy a sad heart has been made joyful on receipt of an explanatory note from me.
To those who are about to many I would sty consult, me i efore doing so, and thus prevent, many after fc ou'oles. and remove many unnecessary fears and piejudices; to those, more especially who have suffeied in early years from disea e, or who have yielded to their passions. To these 1 say, at once, consult with me, do not tarry, delays are dangerous, and as an expert, my time may not always be at your service, you can, by simply eu closing one pound, have the benefit of my experience in the sime manner as if 1 lived in your own town, and with the additional advantage, of thorough privacy.—Yours, tt nl v, LOUIS L. SMITH.
