MINING NEWS.
Prospecting is still being briskly carried on in claims in the neighbourhood of Green’s retf. Blacks, and several parties are reported to have struck leade’S carrying fine gold. Mr Green is making a dray road up to his claim, and expects to have it done this week. Another party is said to have struck good prospects in one of the channel ■claims mi ihe Fiat. News from Mount Ciiffel rush are not the most cheering, a« wo lear n from some who ■ have visited the field that of the many who have tried their fortunes there, but a few have succeeded in striking gold. It is the very general impression however, as the season advances, and the truly arctic ■weather that has reigned there up to the present hag passed, and a fair chance given for prospecting that along the slope of the Mt. Pisa range, there will bo some good finds. Some little ex'itement was caused last week amongst the miner’s of Criffcl and that neighbourhood by the reported discovery of a rich find in (damp Creek, one o f the tributaries of the Lindis River, by Mathesnn and party, a d a goo 1 many made their way their, but whether they have succeeded in striking the metal has not yet transpired. This creek has been worked off ami on for years past in the jerky manner miner’s are apt to work in such out of the way places as Camp Creek, and a good deal ■of gold hag been obtained. It is to be ho- ed that the neighbourhood will now get a thorough pmsp-cting, as it will lie strange indeed if gold in payable quantities !is not found in some other of the many creeks and gullies that are in this locality, and none of them evei tried. On the Lindis River, a few miles from the find und-r notice, was the first, place gold wag discovered in Otago, then fore it would lie in do way strange it other rich discoveries were made thereat onts. The whole conntrv round about abound in indications of alluvial deposits and quartz lodes, and to our mind is worthy of a systematic prospering. Woikisnow in full swine on the Old Man Range, but beyond that fact there is nothing to report.
