On Angnst 26 an infuriated mob iuvaded a hall in the East End of London, where several Mormon missionaries have been preaching for some time and made a complete wreck. The Elders fled for their lives. Several captured were terribly mil treated. They were left on the pavement for dead. The cause of the attack was the stories set afloat that these missionaries had been systematically kidnapping young women and shipping them to Utah to be “ sealed” to rich Mormons. Other tales had been told about indignities inflicted on girls thus entrapped. Mrs Patterson, widow of the Rev. Mark Patterson, sent Sir Charles Dilke, now in India, a second telegram on August 14, declaring she would return to England instantly and stand by his side during his trial as proof that she disbelieved the scandalous crime with which he was charged. Sir Charles replied advising the lady to stay where she was in France. A collision occurred in the Metropolitan District Underground railway at Earl’s Court, due to the signals being broken and unmanageable. One engineer and stoker were kilted, and five other persons badly injured cannot recover. The Qneen and Court left for Balmoral on August 4. The Highland clans gave a grand reception to the Princess Beatrice and Prince Henry of Battenburg. A hostile crowd assembl-d at the Hall depot on the 25th to meet General Booth, of the Sdvation Army. He was hooted, and several attempts made to reach his carriage. The police had great difficulty in preventing the mob from injuring him. He was struck several times wi hj misiles. The reason for the attack was the belief thet he had abducted a girl named Armstrong to make false evidence. The 1 Standard’s Berlin corresoondent says an eminent Turkish diplomatist has declared that the Sultan and Crand Vizier are opposed to an Anglo-Turkish alliance against Russia.

A family with a young lady under their guardianship met a singular adventure while travelling to San Francisco from th« East to emba’k by the Zeafandia for Melbourne, where the Knapps intend to take up their abode. General Grant’s funeral was a very large demonstration. The hearse was drawn by 24 black horses, with a coloured man at the bridle of each.
