Diseased Nature oltentimes breaks forth in strange eruptions.’’—Act iii, Scene 1. TO THE PUBLIC.
SOME patients suffering from nervous affections are afraid from sheer bashfulness and modesty to personally consult a medical man—other patients have not the self possession and coolness when in the consulting room, to accurately describe their symptoms—their habits of life, and the nature of the disease they suffer Lorn. Let such persons (he or she) sit quietly down in the privacy of their own apartments, and with calm minds describe clearly each symptom of their case, a clear statement thus written, and laid before me. is far preferable in nervous diseases to a personal consultation. Where, however, a disease is of a peculiar and exceptional character, a personal consultation may become necessary ; but my success in correspondence is so great, that of the thousands upon thousands whom I have treated by letter during the last 32 years, not a single mistake has ever occurred, not a case has ever been made public —in tact, the very simplicity of my system of correspondence prevents publicity.
At tlio same time medicines are sent to my patients in such a iom as to
defy detection. How many thousands have I not brought joy to? How many have been enabled to enter into the raa.niage state through consulting me 1 How many after marriage have pri vately consulted me and been blessed, and their married lives made fruitful and happy. How many wasted ruined youths of both sexes have also been r stored to health, and thanked their manhood, for hj iving consulted me by letter. How many questions arise where the family physician is unable to uniav, l the case, and where often the patient lingers on, not daring to tell his family medical advi-er tho nature of his complaint, until consumption wasting, or mental diseases set in, and the sufferer g< ts beyond the curabl: stage, and is left a hopeless Wr. ck. A. loiter writ'en in the privacy of the room and dropped into the post box reaches me quietly; the answer is letumed as quietly and nnostenta* tiously, and the patient, without stepping from his chamber, except to post Ids letter, is by return of post put in full possession of the nature of bis case. His hopes are raised, Ids doubts removed, and he is comparatively a new man ; in fact, in many cases, a new being altogether.
The only addition to the ordinary written letter is the age, occupation, j habits and symptoms, nothing more. ] Hie usual consultation fee ot LT. (one pound) must be cue osed, otherwise no answer will be leturued. There are thousands of cases in daily life where a consultation with one at a distance, will remove by a single letter, a great fear, a great care, and it often solves what appears as an impenetrable mystery. Many a sad heart has been made joyfut on receipt of an explanatory note from me.
To those who are about to marry I would say consult me i.efore Uoinu so, and thus prevent many after t; ouldcs, and remove many unnecessary fears and prejudices ; to those, more especially who have suffered in cardy years from disoa e, or who have yielded to their passions. To these I say, at once, consult with me, do not tarry, delays are dangerous, and as an expert, ray time may not always he at your service, you can, by simply en dosing one pound, have the benefit of my experience in the same manner as if 1 lived in your own town, and with the additional advantage of thorough privacy.—Yours, truly, LOUIS L. SMITH.
