A SUCCESSFUL SURGICAL OPERATION.

Tiie American Ambassador at Vienna, Mr Kasson, has lately forwarded to his Government an interesting account of a rema ka' hie surgical operation lately performed by Professor BilUuth, of Vienna, which, wondeifnl to tell, consisted in the removal of a portion of the human stomach, involving ncar.y one third of the organ—an I, strange to say, the patient recovered—the only successful operation of the kind ever perlornicd. The disease for which this operation was performed was cancer of the stomach, attended with the following symtoms : -The appetite is quite poor. There is a peculiar indescribable distress in the stomach, a feeling that has been described as a faint “off lone" sensation; a sticky slime collects about tiie teeth, especially in the morning, accompanied by an unpleasant ta-to. Food fails to satisfy this peculiar faint sensation ; but, on tiiecontiary, it appeals toaggravatc the feeling. The eyes are sunken, tinged with yellow; the haddsand feet become cold and sticky—a cold perspiration. The sufferers feel tired all the time, and sleep does not seem to give rest. After a time the patient becomes nervous and irritable, gloomy his mind being filled with »vil forebodings. When using suddenly from a recumbent position there is a dizzme s, a whist ing sensation, and be is obliged to grasp something firm to keep from falling. The bwels costive, the skin dry and hot at times ; the blood becoming thick and stag* nant, and does not circulate pioporly.
