[BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.] Dunedin, August 20,7.30 p.m, A man|named] John Crisp, whilst drawing an unexploded charge of dynamite at Deborah Bay this morns ing, the charge went off, and he was killed’on the spot. A woman threw;[her boy, about four years old, on a railway line before a morning train at Upper Ilutt on Tuesday, but he was rescued before the train overtook him.
The Sydney police have 'arrested two men suspected of being concerned in the murder of a policeman at Canterbury, N.S.W., last week At yesterdays' Land Board meeting the application of A Brown, Lauder, to have upset price of perpetual lease section reduced to one shilling was declined in the meantime. S Plans were forwarded by Vincent Council, showing where they proposed spending deferred payment money on roads,"and they were'approved. It will be remembered that it- was stated the]AssessmentofJProperty Tax wonld be made this year upon the new valuation list, and it was pointed out that if that were done the revenue from that source would fall short of the estimate, inasmuch as property having depreciated in value, the new valuation would be less than the old, and the revenue would therefore be smaller. Fortunately for the Government, however, the new lists are not yet ready, and the Assessment will therefore be made on the old valuation list. It is rumoured that Mr Ormond’s reason tor declining at the last moment to bringdown a no-confidence motion, was his stipulation that if successful he should be free to choose his own colleagues in the new Ministry. This was objected to. On the Saturday Mr Ormond was asked to move, when hesaid|he would consider and give a definite [answer next day. After consideration, he said ho could not carry the motion, and ao Informed others who had suggested that he should move it. The idea that Mr Ormond should move was then abandoned. The Public Works Statement will probably be delivered on Tuesday next, and the duration of the sessson is variously estimated at three, four, or five weeks, but-ts everybody knows this must be decided altogether by circumstancesLondon, August 18. Sir Charles Bilke is iu receipt of a communication from a large number electors at Chelsea, which borough he represents in. Parliament, accepting his denial of the charges recently made against him, and assuring him of iheir continued confidence. The ‘ Standard’ to-day asserts that Russia has made modified’proposals to the English Government with regard to the occupancy of the ZuKikar Pass, and that a peaceful settlement of the frontier difficulty is expected to ensue. Paris, August 18.
Cholera continues to spread in the south of France, and several cases have appeared at Toulon. A man assuming the garb of a priest and .giving the name of Father Kanavacks, has been arrested in India as a Russian spy, ho is thought by the authorities to be identical with tho ex-communist Olivier Pain, who, it is believed, recently kept the Mahdi in* formed ofthe movements and strength of the British troops in Egypt Earl Carnarvon, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, accompanied by the Countess is making a tour ot the west of Ireland.
The vice-regal party has met so far with a hearty reception.
