[BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.] Dunedin, July 23, 7.30 p.m. A gas explosion took place last night at Wain’s Hotel, and two of the front windows were blown out, but no personal injury was sustained. Over 5000 persons were present at the football match Otago v Wellington yesterday, and was won by former by 11 points to nil. At a special meeting of Land Board to-day to consider question of deferred payment selectors who are in arrears. A long discussion took place as to what should be done, and it was resolved in most cases that the Bangms should report individually on the cases. There is a storm brewing in Wei lington, and it is said a no-confidence motion will bo proposed immediately,
and that Major Atkinson may do it. The latest rumour in the lobby tonight is that a majority in the House ■will vote in favor of a want of confidence motion, and it seems to be taken for granted that such a motion will be tabled before many days have passed ; who will bring it up is not known, but it is said that a new Ministry has already been decided upon, this Ministry (so says dame rumour) will be repre« sented by the young Hew Zealand party, and will contain new blood. They will come into ofiice without a policy, and will simply confine their efforts to the administration of the affairs of the Colony, and actas a make shift till the end of the session. The return of the Invincible for the last crushing is 417 ounces from 1000 tons.
At Land Board yesterday, Michael Sammon applied to purchase fifty acres of a homestead area at Tinkers under section 66 of the Mines Act. The Warden stated that the applicant had occupied the land for 15 years, and improved some of it at a cost of LSOO. The Government to be recommended to grant the application. Applications .to purchase tinder deferred payment leases J. Me lutosh Tiger Hill, Helen Mclntosh Tiger Hill approved. It is reported that the barmaids in Wellington propose giving a dinner to Mr V. Pyke in recognition of his services in championing their cause. London, July 21.
In the House of Commons to-night Lord Randolph Churchill Secretary of State for India gave an official denial to the statement recently made by the “ Standard ” newspaper to the effect that Maruchak had been ceded to Russia in exchange for the Zuldkar Pass.
The Hon. F, Stanley informed the House that a gradual reduction of the Imperial forces would take place so far as was consistent with the safety of the Empire. A severe engagement took place, lasting two days, at the expiration of which time the assailants were repulsed with a loss of fully 3000. It is expected that the Earl of Carnarvon will take an early opportunately of considering the memorials relative to the release of several Irish prisoners
The “ Times,’' commenting on the matter, condemns the action ot Lord Salisbury in truckling to Mr Parnell. The King of Abyssinia will probably send troops to relieve the be« leaguered garrisons at Kassala.
