OP HIR.

[Communicated] A Mutual Improvement Society has recently been formed here. Mr J. N.Stewart, schoolmaster, was chosen President; Dr Hyde, Vice-President; and Mr G. E. Boulton, Hon. Secretary. The object of the society is to bring out and cultivate by discussion some of the latent talent in our district, and also to provide recreation suitable for the improvement of the mind. The society has already a goodly number of members on the roll, and bids fair to be f popular in the district. Its first regular ? meeting, to open the winter season, was X held in the Athenaeum on Monday evening, 22nd ult., as a sort of “ social,” to enlist sympathy with the object. The meeting was free to all, ladies specially invited. Several songs, readings, and recitations were given with goo I; spirit by various ladies and gentlemen present. The subject of discussion, “ Whether married or single life is to be preferred,” was humourously treated for the sake of adding to the amusement of the evening. The Vice-President tok the vote of the audience on the subject of debate, and said it was a tie (somebody suggested that the proper issue of the subjeit was a “tie”) ; he then gave his casting vote in favour of married life. The President then stared that the meetings of the society would be held every Monday evening until October, after which, the company broke up, everybody being well pleased with the evening’s entertainment.
