THE WAR OF THE TOWNS-CROM-WELL CLYDE, & ALEXANDRA.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir—Clyde having merged into a County Cromwell has been the first to make an attack on Clyde by getting up a petition, signed tas rumour says) to the extent of 6no signatures, to be presented to Parliament this present session, asking that the projected Warden's quarters may be erected at Cromwell, as that place is the most central. While the inhabitants of Clyde are meditating their plans, the Alexandra Corpora tinu scents the battle, and are in the field with a like petition, praying that the Warden's quarters may be erected at that place, as it is the most central. Now, Sir, when I was asked to canvass the lower division of the Vincent County for the part>nse of having the Wai den’s quarters at Clyde, and asking the Government to make no alteration in the existing state of affairs, I had no idea that the Alexandra Town Council had been into the County and canvassed the Lower Division and Roxburgh with a staff of no less than seven persona engaged in obtaining signatures to their petition. The most unsatisfactory part of the matter is the way in which the Alexandra petition whs drawn out. and the manner in whi.’h it was represe ted to those who igneii it -that there was no alternative but to sign ir, or let the quarters be erected at from we'l, as Clyde was not taking any action in the matter. The opinion of nearly all those Iha signed th- Alexandra petition was that they were in favour of the Wa-den’s quarters being erected at Clyde, lut signed the petition of Alexandia against Cromwell for the reason I have just stated ; hence the great hurry (and what looks very like a trap) to get the district can vassed hj fore any action could be taken by the inhabitants ot Clyde and the Lower Divi-i n of the ConntyJ As I was the only person engaged in canvassing Clyde - and the Lower Division of the County for the purpose of obtaining signatures to our petition, ,1 was very particular 'n ." trine the opinion of all on this matter, ami 1 find that in the whole of my canv.ssiog tom only five persons definitely expressed themselves in favour of the Warden's quarters ’ain't erected at Alexandra Sir, before I conclude I must explain that the reason 1 have taken up mv neu on this subject is at the earnest request of those who deem themselves to have been led into the trap by sinning the Alexandra petition. Apologising for thus troubling you, I am, etc., Thomas Sims. Clyde, June 24.1885.
