A LIVELY PLACE.
It’s related of a tourist in one of the Western States of Americi, who had spent the night in an hotel in a rough township, hat, on coming down in the morning, he called the attention of the landlord to sortie grapes which, were scattered about the bar, "Grapes!” said the astonished land-
lord. ‘ Thmu's ey<H, as was goaded ouf. in a scrim'nago last night." Th's inci lent (sai a the Melbourne Arjius) mint surely have taken place at Sh ■ridan, in Wyoming, where a fam ih milian named Buck'ey, bctte • known as “ Dick the Sho iter," has just met with hia deserts. L)iek was the tei ror of the Western Territories, owing to his great strength and certainty of aim. Me had deserted from the army, and giv hered round him a gang of desperadoes as lawless as himse f. He had a pi iyful habit of discharging his revolver •‘promiscuously” at pedes . trians; and to refuse to drink with him when he was taking spirituous re freshnn-ntat a tavern liar was to invite sudden death by perforation with a bull -t. On the 7th March he entered a drinking saloon in Sheridan, and called upon everybody present to “liquor up” at his expense. They all complied, with the exception oi a miner named Jones, who complained of ill-health. “I don’t circa said Dick ; “ well or ill, you’ve got to drink wi'h me; ” and he cocked his weapon at him. Jones laughingly re plied: “Oh, well, if you insist up >n it, I wil 1 ; but don’t let us quarrel over itand stepping behind the bar he seized a double-barrelled shot gun which stood in the cornet. Quick as th mght Dick the Shooter pulled the trigger of his revolver, but without effect; did an a second and a third time, and just as he was pieparing to do so a fourth time both barrels of the gun were discharged at hj ra, and almost disembowelled he dropped on the floor. When the ( istol was examined it was found to contain three empty and three loaded cartridges He had pu led the trigger on the three empty barrels in rapid succession, thus saving the life of the man he intended t> murder and sacrificing his own. If incidentsof this kind are of frequent occurrence in Sheridan, it must be a lively place to live in.
