An interesting and lively debate on the mining industry versus the agricultural, took place at the weekly meeting of the Alexandra Mutual Improvement Society last Tuca lay. After a Well sustained discussion, the chairman,Mr VV F.F nest, put the question, when eleven members chose to record their vote in favor of mining, and nine in favour of agricultural pursuits. A large number seemed to view the question in relation to the present circumstances of the colony, and considered that the prosecution of the mining industry, in present circumstances of depression in agriculture, and every other industry, ought to be vigorously encouraged and fostered by the public and by the government. It was thought if gold and other minerals were plenufully got just now, they would give an impetus to every other industry, as.the discovery of gold did at the beginning of the settlement of 0 ago; and also that the settlement of the colony would he hirgnly increased and means obtained to meet ami cope with the heavy debt with which it is burdened.
