THE SALVATIONISTS AND FALLEN WOMEN.
Two representatives from the Salvation Army (Major Barker and Major Howard) accompanied ny Mr Berry. M L A., waited on the Treasurer a few days ago, to ask for a special grant iu ai<l of a rescued sisters’ home in course of form it ton by the executive of the Salvation Army organisation Mr berry sated that ill : increase of contagious diseases amongst fallen women was a problem that had on gaged public attention, and it was ad- ; 11 to I on ail hands that, something should be done for these poor creatures, many of whom were lying about dying
like dogs. Hut this difficulty was how to treat the quest! u> } public opinion being very conflicting. The Salvation. Army seemed to be particularly suited for this kind of work. The army took to the work con amove, and made no distinctions as to the religious views hold bv the patients. He thought, therefore, that the Treasurer might fairly promise to assist the Army in the purchase of a building, which it was proposed to utilise as a home for women suffering from contagious disenses. Mr Barker stated that the building intended to be purchased consisted of 23 rooms, and would accomodate from se /enty to eighty patients. The building would cost L 2,500, and LSOO was requited for fitting it up. The Army had raised L 492 towards this work, and a special appeal was to be made next week, which it was contemplated would realise LSOO more. Mr Service replied that the request made by the deputation was an en« tirely new departure for the Government to lake, but it was one of a kind which would be favorably considered He thought that Parliament would be favorable to passing a small grant of LIOOO at least for the purpose stated, and he promised on behalf of the Go* verpment that Parliament should be asked next session. The Army was making a bold attempt to deal with a very difficult question. But in the event of Pariiameut refusing to grant the raoney ; he would make one of ten individuals to subscribe LIOO.
Major Barker said he was very well satisfied with the Treasurer’s r- ply.
