ALEXANDRA SCHOOL PUBLIC EXAMINATION.
The annual public examination of this school which should base been held last Christmas, hut was postponed on account of the small attendance at that time through sickness, took place on Thmsday, April 2. A good number of parents and visitors were present, though not so many as have been on former occasions. The written examination papers were taken on the two previous days, the examiners being the Bov. Mr Lothian, Mrs Mime, and Miss The examination papers were very well answered, and the result of the examination was highly satisfactory. At the distribution of the prixes Mr G. N. M'Donald (Mayor) presided, anddietiibnted the prizes, which were very handsome, but the prizetakers showed good work for their honours. The chairman said ho had much pleasure in being present, and was glad to see auch good results, and also that this year so many of the children were receiving instruction in singing. He would a«K for a ■very hearty vote of thanks to the master and mistress of the school -Mr Alfred and Miss Bowden- for their success in conducting their work, which was shown in the results of the examination to day, as also on former occasions. Mr Aldred returned thanks for Miss Bowden and himself, an 1 urged parents to send their children regularly to scliool. The Rev. Mr Lothian, in presenting the nrize to the Dux of 'he school said that on behalf of the examiners he had to state that they were well satisfied with the papers sent in, because the questions set were Very searching and Rome of them even difficult. He hoped the school would continue to progress and keep up its good name for thorough and efficient work. He would imureas on parents the great desirability and necessity of sending the children regularly to school. The educational pnvileg s of this land were great and ought to be va'ued. For there might C'*me a change throu ,hj stress of taxation caused by war; etc which won d make it necessary to imnose a considerable tax on that education which was now so free and within the reach of all. Mr John Maeqneen, of Dunedin, who was present and took much interest in the examination, said that education had ma !e a ureal advance since the days when he attended school. He was very much pleased with the examination and the smartness of f e childr n, and hoped the school would go on and prosper. At the ooncm ion of the pioceedings it was resolved by those present, on the motion of Mr Widiam Thomson, secondeo by Mr Macqueeu, to give the children a picnic on Easter Monday, and a committee tb**n appointed to after the arrangements, an.l the children were in vited to me.t at the school on Monday at 1 o’clock. Votes of thanks to the visitors, the examiners, and the chairman, brought the pioceedings to a close. On Monday, 6<-h inst.. the schoolchild ren assembled in the Public Recreation Ground, where also a large number of the p.rents and visitors were present, ihe day was beautiful. There was an abundant supply of eatables, which were -illingly dia’iibuted by active hands, and ■during a day a variety of amusing and interesting sports were held for the children, M ny handsome gifts and trophies were awarded to the wi mers. At the concision three hearty cheers were given for those who had so liberally and readily contributed the funds for the pic-nic amounting to about Ll3, an I to the collectors Miss Biown and Miss Thomson, and Mr J. Macqueen. Three hearty cheers were also given tor the teachers of the school Mr Aldred and Miss Bowden, ami a very pleasant day’s enjoyment was brought to a close just as the stiades of evening began to fail.
