Dunedin, March 28, 7J55p.m. The sculling championship of the world between Hanlan and Beach was rowed at Sydney to-day,, and resulted in an easy victory for Beach by aiz lengths. ■ The water Was smooth. “ (Through our Exchange). SydSey, March 28. The sculling match between William Beach and Edward Hanlan for LSOO a bide and the championship of the world took place to-day 0705 the usual coarse on *he Parramatta River. Every point of vantage was thronged with jsagar spectators,, the steamere were loade I to their utmost capacity, • add the greatest, interest was manifested by the immense assemblage, Beth men were in splendid condition. Banian rowed in his new Haddock boat. The two men got well away and for the first mile the pace was tenific, both being well together. Then Beach gradually but surely draw ahead, until he was half a boat’s length in front of Hanlan. From that but the New South Welshman increased hie lead, and at Putney had nine lengths to the good, the Canadian then being in difficulties. Beach was still fresh,’ and pulling strong. Passing Gladeville is was patent to all that the race was virtually over.. Beach won aa he diked, and cams in six lengths ahead of his opponent, amidst a perfect storm of shoots and the most intense excitement. The time was 23min. 45seo. " ‘ Wellington, March 29. -The result of the sculling race created a good deal of enthusiasm here. At 7 o’clock last night a crowd assembled outside the Evening Post office, and on the result being announced three cheers were given for Reach. Hanlan was tho favourite here at 2 to 1, but there was but little betting. ■ Sydney, March 31. Hanlan freely admits his complete defeat by Beach, and bis conviction that the best man won. THE OXFORD-CAMBRI DUE BOAT RACE. London, March 28. The Inter-University boat race to-day resulted in a victory for Oxford, who were the, favourites at 2 to I.
