The only item of news that reaches us from the Old Man Range this week is that the contractors of the Union Company’s tunnel a e pushing ahead, and for .the past we k have been in good hard ground, indinoting that the solid country has been reached. We have heard of several enquiries for White’s Compmy shares at par, but do not know of any sales having been effected. A general feeling of confidence in the 01,1 Mao reefs appears to be gaining a hold of all parties interested. There is but little dor.ht that if a bat’ery were on the hill greater activity would be observed on many of the claims than how is.
_ ‘Of all the companies that have performed in Clyde we shall be fully borne out iu‘ say. ina th'dt none yet ever succeeded so, welfin carrying their an lienee with them as did the Piust Family (assisted by Mist Heath) on Monday, evening last. From tha father of the family to tha youngest, a wee little midget .some 5 years of age, we feel pursita le l they have hut few equals ; indeed, tiiey are marvels, and chief wonder is how such rare talent in their particular line could exist Not only are they the ranft sunple of all acrobats, sye have ever s?en, but they are endowed with musical abilities of no mean order. Words cannot convey the sense of a tithe of their wonderful powers, they must b; seen to he believed in, and we unhesitatingly racommend every one who has the chance to see them. According to their advertisement in another column, they appear at Ophir on Monday next, at Alexandra on Tuesday, and at Cromwell on Wednesday and Thurs lay, and at each. place we shall he pleased to hear of them being met with bumper houses. The Assignee said, so far as he could see, af tea all eh irges were covere', and the li teral allowance was paid to the debtor, there would be nothing for distribution amongst'the creditors, I' the death notice in last week’s issue ; also in the circulars announcing the f tnera! of the much lamented Michael Joseph MacGtnns, the unfortunate omission was made of the initiil characters R I, P. As in the minds of some few there is an impression the omission was purposely made by us, we hasten at once to assure both the friends, a quain ances, an 1 co religionists of the deceased that the mistake was one p sre'y of omission, and no one can regret it more than ourselves
A six-roomed cottage in Clyde, the property of Mr Robert Stewart, and occupied hv Mr John Cox, was totally destroyed hy fi-a on Tuesday afternoon last, together wi hj the whole of the contents, excepting one hex of clochin; and a few hooks of accounts. Unfortunately there were bnt few a hilt males in the town at the time, the rest being away at the races, and the i ffirts of the few to save the property were futile. Mrs Cox hid been wishing ail day, ami at time of the outbreak was hanging out some of the clothes, therefore is unable to *ȴ now the fire oiiginatad Though the house was insured for LIOO, and the contents for Id 50, both the landlord and tenant will be considerable losers,
