DUNSTAN DISTRICT HOSPITAL.

The twenty-second annual meeting of the ■nbsetibers to the above institution was held in the Library Hall, Clyde, on Saturday, February the 7th lust., at 3 p.m. There was a good attendance and Ur J. Miles wss called to the chair. The Secretary road the following reports : Twenty-second Annual report op the Committee of Management op the Dunstan District Hospital. To the Subscribers—--In presenting to you this, our 22nd Annnal ltwort, we beg to tender our hearty and sjfacere thanks to all those who by their contributions have enabled us to conduct the affairs of the Institution and to maintain its usefulness. During onr term of office our every effort has at all times, and under all circumstances, been directed towards the economical, as also the efficient management of the Institution, and if in all things we have not succeeded to the full extent of •onr desires, we can but hope that what wo have done will meet with your approval One scheme, the supplying a good and onnstant supply of water to the Institution has ever been in our minds, and with the view of carrying out that o 1 j ct we have obtained all estimates of costa, besides laying down the projected course of the stream. The funds at our command, however, at no one time were sufficient to warrant ns in incurring the expense. We hope, however, as the scheme would he of such great value to the institution not alone for domestic purposes, but for irrigating the grounds, also in the event of au outbreak of fire, that our successors will be enabled to complete the scheme Initiated. During our term of office we have not made any appeal to the Vincent County Council nor to the Alexandra Borough Council for assistance, we mention this fact thinking that if a direct appeal came from the body of subscribers, each body would be the more likely to open their purse strings wider than if the appeal came from the Committee. During the year, patient Murdoch, who it will be remembered had been an inmate (incurable) for a very long time, wa« (at his own wish) sent to the Old Country by one of the direct steamers from Port Chalmers, and we are pleased to say he arrived there safely. Representations having been made to the Government that it was the desire of the poor fellow to go home, and moreover, it being shown that by aiding him to carry ■out his desire tbat the Colony would he relieved fiom the heavy burden of LI per week, which sum was allowed by the Go-* vernment for his maintenance and attendance, a subsidy up to Ls (| was granted, and as the total cost of Murdoch’s trans mission right through from the doors of the Institution to London was under that sum, the Institution was at no <xpense.

The Treasurer’s report which is now on the table and will be read to you in due course, we are pleased to think cannot bur be satisfactory to you, showing as it does a credit balance of nearly LI 0(1 to commence the new year with. We may m-ntion there Are some few other amounts in the hands of collectors which have not as yet come to hand, these, with the sut>sidy on same, we think will he little short of 1,50, the actual credit balance, there! -re is somewhat about Ll5O.

The Surgeon’s report is also on the table and which will he read, speaks for itself. Again thanking all those, ladies and Gentlemen, also the local committee’s iudivi filially and collecthely. for their kind and considerate assistance, and in the hope that our successors may its ve meted out to them a like liberal support. Wo remain, Gentleman, Yonr Obedient Servant*, For the Committee of Management, Geo. Fache, Secretary.

Sirs, Your Ob»d'ent Servant, George A. Lewis, M.8., etc., Resident Surgeon. January 30th, 1885. Resolved—That the reports as read be received, and that a vote of thanks be recorded to the retiring Committee of Management for thei.- exertions during the past year, to the hon. Treasurer, Mr J. hi. Steven*, for the valuable services rendered by him, and to the other officers of the In stitution.

The election of officers and members of committee for the current year was proceeded with and resulted as follows : Mr M. J. Maeginnis, President. MrJ.S. Hickson, R.M , Vice President. Mr J. B. Stevens, Treasurer. Members nf committee—Messrs J. Butler, (Bald Hill Flat) Mr T. Andrews, (White's Reef) J. Crawford, (Dunstan Commonage) J. B. Wingfield, (Alexandra) P. Flannery, (Ida Valley) J. Pitches, (Ophir) R. Sheppard, (Tinkers) and Miles, Holt, Jeffery, Cambridge, Attfield, and Fache, Clyde. Messrs Clinton and Macgeorge, Auditors. Dr Blackpool, Cromwell, and Dr Hyde, Ophir, honorary Suvgeions. Resolved —That a vote of thanks be recorded Drs Staekpool and Hyde for past services, and that same be conveyed to them by letter. A discussion ensued on the suggestion embodied in the report of the retiring com ■ mit tee regarding the soliciting of special aid from the Vincent County Council and the Borough of Alexandra. The view was generally held that it was the duty of the local governing bo lies to aid and assist in the maintenance of the local charitable in - stitutions in their midst, the more especially when aid was required for any special work of improvements, and as a permanent and good supply of wader was not alone required but was indeed a necessity, and, moreover, as out of ordinary revenue the funds eoulil not bo provided for same the meeting concluded that every pressure should be brought to bear on both the County Council and the Alexandra Borough for assistance. After further discussi -n it was resolved That it be a recommendation to the newly elected Committee of Management to use every exertion in their power to complete the scheme initiated by their predecessors to provide a go d and permanent supply of water to the Institution. The meeting then closed with the customary vote of thanks to the chair.
