CROMWELL RACES, These races took place on Friday and Saturday last the 26th and 27th of December, and attracted, as usual, a large representative crowd of people from all parts of the goldfields, Naaeby, Lakes, Teviot and surrounding country being well represented. The weather until late in the afternoon was fine on each day, when it rained heavily, making things anything bqt comfortable for either the spectators,/or the jockeys of the competing horses ; thoteter, indeed, suffered a porfe A t martyrdonSfrora the splashing, and when passing the winning post presented anything but a respectable appearance. The fields of horses in eaeh event were good, and the competition amongst the jockeys for the honor of first making their bow to the judge was keen in the extreme, and in but one or two instances the was the public’s favorite successful. In the trot it was specially the case, as a rank outsider came in w th a big lead, and on the totalisator carried the handsome dividend of L 33 odd. The conducting of the meeting by the stewards was everything to be desired, not a hitch occurring throughout tha meeting, though if the truth be be told the starting for some of the events could have been improved upon. The stewards were ever to the fore, and the kind and considerate courtesy and liberality extended to visitors from a distance was generally remarked upon. .Mr James Lawrence, as caterer, succeeded in gaining the approbation of his nmn rons patrons, and Messrs Murrell and Solomon manipulated the total isator without raising a question, the amount put through was L 2476.
