The revenue returns for quarter for Victoria, New South Wales, and South .Australia, show a considerable increase compared with same quarter last year. News has liesa received from Wairo of the death of three Native children by burning, at a place called Whakakiou, on Sunday night. A party of 15 were holding a tangi over the body otnn old woman, and went to sleep. TJre whare caught fire and the children ■wire burnt before they could be rescued Gillies and Co.’s sawmill in the Seaward Bush was burnt last night. The cause of the fire is unknown. Some of the mill hands passed through the shed 20 minutes before the lire was discovered. The imurances are L4OO each in the Union and New Zealand. The loss is computed at L4OO above the insurances.
On Saturday night last, during a Leavy rairi sjkirni, two and Biitterlieid, started to cross the country froth Sherwood railway station in Caterbury, for home. After going some distance Butterfield missed Snowden, he seaiched but failed to find him Next morning ho was found ■dead about half a mile from where Butterfield missed him. Both men had been drinking. Snowden died Irora congestion of the lungs, caused by exposure. At six this morning the constable •on duty in Dee Street, Invercargill, found W Smith’s drapery esfcahlishmenton fire. The fire brigade was -s-ion on the ground, but nothing could be done to prevent the destruction of the buildings. The brick shop ol •James Craig, watchmaker, on the south side, was iu great danger, and «o was Sloan’s Theatre adjoining. Dunning’s Opera Company removed their properties, and then rendered valuable ..ssistance in pumping and saving property. As it was the theatre wns somewhat damaged. Adjoining -Smith’s shop on the northern side was the boot warehouse of R. Sloan and Sons, and this soon caught. Between this and the next building (occupied by Rein and Ferguson, watchmakers) w«s au iron wail, and for a long time the brigade kept the flames from getting beyond this. At 9 o’clock; -however, whan everbody thought all was safe, and the water was-exhausted, Bein and Ferguson’s plain look fire in .-ever.il places, and th j tire spread from there to the premises of Ross (fruiterer), R. -Cleave (sieisman), and Cowpei and Wilson All these places were ou.iit, but' before this a goo-J deal of stock bad been got out. The Prince of Wales Hotel, separated from Cowper and Wilson’s by a right-of-way, was in great danger, and was only saved owing to a brick wall erected between it and the burning-shop Had the hotel caught the block might have been swept to Spey street, and great loss occasioned. Nothing is known as to the origin of the tire. The total insurances were L 18,500. The Annual Horse Parade to-day was very successful, both as to quan-fc-ty and quality, Good progress is said to have been male with the Central Otago Railway recently. Jn the House of Representatives yesterday a motion was carried for placing country corps of Volunteers on a more saliriactory footing, as also n, motion by Mr J. B. Bradshaw that the office of Coroner should not be held by % medical practitioner iu active practice. The Minister of Justice intimated that the Government would take steps to give effect to the motion. The Public Works ->tatemar.t Ims been again put off till Tuesday next. When Mr Hob's’ Bill to abolish the publication iu any newspaper of advertisements relating to consultations, sweeps, betting offices, etc, c.mo on for discussion, Mr Gillies madea, tie:CH onslaught on the growing gambling mania of the age. The Bill was ordered to be read a second time by a large majority. Mr Macandrew gave notice that he would move that greater encoiimge meat bo given to the manufacture of paper iu the colony. Dr Newman gave notice that he would ask if the Government would arrange that all Government servants be given full pay d"ving absence through illmss. Sir George Grev gave notice of a Bill to provide that Judges of the Supreme Comt bo. appointed for five years, and no longer. The Mining Companies Act Amendment L>iU*wns pa-sed and read, and was reported without amendment. Tie Employment of Females and Otlss Act Amendment Bill was considered in committee, and reported without amendment.
