A BIG MINING ENTERPRISE.

The on the West Coast goldfields by Mr 11, A.Gordon, Inspecting, Engineer, pub) shed with the Secretary’s report on the iioldtiqlds of Now Z.-ahm-l, contain? the following respecting the Humphrey's Gully district There are largo works in course of construction here' to enable the whole of the drift terraces in the neighborhood to bo sluiced away in a wholesale manner into the valley of tile a rahura Kiver. These works are being constructed by the Humphrey's Gully Company, which is formed with a capital of U50.000. They have constructed an open ditch for a distance ot about live mii.-s, capable of carrying about 101) heads of water; and iu.ar .viilltown there is about three-quarters of a mile in length of a ponderous aquo iuct, which resembles more a canal than a water race, very substantially constructed, and they are at the present time construe;in.; a reservoir to store water, and tunnelling through the range to get the water on the rniningTeases. When these works arc complete, and a tail race constructed, a commencement will be made to work their ground ; but it is slid a question whether the .preset supply of water will he sufficient to carry on their extensive operations, and, if not, the water race will have (o ho cx-ton-hd to the several creeks that are on a level with the race lino, and possibly may have to be taken into the Arahura'itiver before a large permanent supply in dry weather can be obtained. They have a great death of wash 'rift, with a little line gold distri uted all through it, and there no. s not appear to be, so far as yet discovered, any permanent bottom. If the quanta t. - of water anticipated ii available, very poor i rnm 1 will pay for wnrkinsr, as the quantity of dirt that can be washed will he enormous. Great, credit is due to Mr P. Comisky, of Auckland, who has been the means ..f two large and influential companies constructing works ot groat magnitude, involving an immense expenditure, to develop tin) resources of this and the Boss district ”
