VINCENT COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Vincent County Council was hold in the Council Chambers, on Wednesday, the 26th inst. Present—Messrs Fraser (Chairman), Maoginris, Pitches, Oololough, and Sheppard. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Letters were received from the Eawarau end Hawea Licensing Committees asking for a salary of LlO and L 5 respectively for the Licensing Clerk—After a great deal of discussion the Council decided that they could not entertain the application. Bridge over Smith’s Gully, Bannockburn. —The Chairman having read and ex plained the correspondence in connection with this contract and the difficulty in ob tabling a reserve, it was resolved to write the Provost Committee informing them that unless the objections to ihe reserve were withdrawn, the Council would not take any farther aetion in the matter. A letter was received from the Manager of Galloway Station drawing the attention of the Council to the bad state of the road leading to the Galloway wool sheds, and aiming that it might be put in repair before the wool season.—Resolved that the Engineer report at the next meeting the cost of repairs. A letter was also received from Messrs Laidlaw and Crawford asking the Council to cut 10 chains of a channel from their property to prevent the wash in time of flood from Spoitis Creek.—Referred to the Engineer to report. The Engineer’s report on bridges, femes, and roads, and recommending the expenditure of small sums on several of them, was read and adopted. The Council adjourned at 6 p.m. On resuming at 8.45, The Ranger’s report was read, drawing attention to the great difficulty he experienced in registering cattle, and asking for a tracing of the Commonage; also referred to th'e dog tax, which showed that 600 dogs had been registered from the 19th May, as against 323 for the whole of last year.—i eft ever till uext meeting. A general discussion took place in reference to imposing a tax on carriers and vehicles applying for hire in Vince it County, as it was considered but just that those using the roads should contribute towards keeping them in order.—Toe subject was allowed to stand over till next meeting. . . , , , Proposed by Cr. Macgmms, seconded by Cr. Shephard, that a rate of J in the L be struck for the year. The application of William Williams for a •slaughtering license was granted, Cr Sheppard asked whether the Tinkers Sludge Channel subsidy of L for L lapsed at the end of the 12 months. The Chairman replied that it did. The Chairman said that he had received a letter from George Cameron sbatiag that he had been summoned for 3s 2d for rates of propeity that he did net own, and for which a verdict was given against him with costs, amounting to LI 14s 2d.
