THE REPORTED MASSACRE BY THE MADHI.

The Daily News publishes a long letter from it» correspondent in the Soudan (who is understood to be Mr O'Kelly, M.P ) It is tatod Dongola, April 2, and gives further interesting particulars respecting the Maluli and his followers. The writer says ; “ Although the development of the movement led by M.ahommed Ahmed has been attended with very considerable loss of life, the. number of persona killed in cold blood is small considering the character of the t.xoops who follow the rebel standard Exc pt the bodies of fijbting men annihilated, or nearly so, in various disastrous battles, there Ims come under my notice no ease of cold-blooded slaughter. It is quite true that vacuo stories are told by the Turkish officials of wbo'etalo massacres hy the Bedouins ; but the statements of Turkish officials should bo received with caution.’ Although a large number of Arabs—as many a-41,000 according to one estimate—wera killed in the various assaults and combats about Obeid, the Mahdi’s army sought no vengeance when the fortune of war placed the garrison at their mercy. Among the civil population were a number of Syrian, Greek, and Cm tic Christians, as well as some priests and nuns of the Austrian Catholic Mis-ion- Thomdi an effort was made to terrorise thesn people into abandoning Christianity and embracing the new religion, none of them weio actually put to death.”
