Short'y after tho ordinary passenger train which leaves Ess n lon for Melbourne at five minutes past 4 o'clock had got clear of the station the same day. the guard heard a report of firearms in the train, and on arriving at Ascotvale a search was made through the carriages. After going through several carriages Elwes was found lying partly on the seat and par- ly on the floor of a first-class compartment, and a quantity of blood was flowing from a wound in his left breast. A full-sized six-chamber bull-dog revolver was lying on the seat, where it had jnst fallen from the hand of the would-be suicide, whose clothes were disarranged to some extent, and hesmevred with blood. The ball dropped from the sufferer’s clothes when they were removed in the hospital The wound is of a dangerous character. Some forty odd cartridges weie found in the pockets of the sufferers clothes, also a number of photographs, and a card upon which was written in Blwes’s hiu (writing “ I am tired of this world, and am resolved to end my days.” It appears that Elwes bought the revolver and the cartridges at about the time that he should hj tve been in attendance at the City Court.
