The question of dummyism again came before tne Land Board yesterday, tbe Boaid being requested to hold an inquiry regard* mg a number of pastoral sections iu Wattabuna. Several selectors of deferred payment sections were called upon to appear before the Lanl Board yesterday to show cause why their licenses should not be forfeited. One of the selectors who was represented by Mr Connell, intimated that he desired to have bis license forfeited, as although he had built a house on the land he was afraid to go and live there, The land being rough he thought he could not make a living on so small a section, and he was apprehensive that after more money had been spent on the land his license would beforfeited if he worked at his trade .off the land. The Chief Commissioner said that this was a mistaken idea, and a period of* 14 days was granted'to the selector to reconsider the matter.
A slight shock of earthquake was felt at Wangauui yesterday. There will be three days racing at this meeting,
The Wellington correspondent of the DaUy Times telegraphs that a rumour has reached that city that Mr T. Fergus, M.H.R. for Wakatipu,'is likely to resign his seat, owing to his ■ xtensi ve contracts m Tasmania necessitating his absence from the colony. It is furtbei rumoured that in that case there would be every probability of Sir Julius Vogel being returned for the constituency. ' A fire occurred last night.by which a''? seven roomed house occupied by John Warden.-' was destroyed. Insurance L 250, the origin of the lire is unknown. The New Zealand representative football team played Wellington to-day, and won the match.
Mr Henry Driver has retired from the directorship of theWaimca Plains Railway.
Messrs Esther and Low have become the purchasers of the Ciiterion Hotel here. The parly of prospectors sent up by the Wanganui Prospecting Company returned to town yesterday, not being allowed to go on to the country which they went up to test. The party were very well treated by the Natives, but Wahanni objected to their going into Tapua territory, the proper ownership of which is disputed, aud they returned to town.
