The Prtrs 'of Dnnedift' and Christchurch are unanimous in their condemnation of Sir Geosoe Grey’s platform speeches. And this is not surprising.
A o doubt they were delivered wit!*., all the oratorical graces which he has always at command, and accented wiEh'the silvery tones he can so skilfully modulate. But there is nothing in them. Head them from end to end, if you have patience tor the task, arid /you find words only without meaning. More dreary platitudes were never delivered amidst the applause, as it would seem of a huge mob who evidently preferred sound to the .affair is in Council, which has just issued a festo, in which the nationalisation of the land is a prominent feature. Sir this proposal, saying very truly, (that it will be a very long time before men will- be - “ educated " (1) to, the .. point of saying—“ We do not wish for a home of oui own; we wish to be turned out eyety 14 or 21 years, and take our chance of getting a farm again” Yet, notwithstanding this avowal, the President of the Trades and Labour Council moved; apd, a.r ! "' Vice-President seconded, -a, motion .expressing . “entire. icontidenpe jp.. gir Geohoe Grey as a representative of the people."« )If they hpvejspch': “ entire confidence ” in a gentleman who | does not approve of the main plank of tljeir platform, it is certain that they cannot ! hdVe any 5 faith in theinselvesi But the fact is, Sir George lis allowed to do and say things that would not - be tolerated in any lesser man. Any other than himself who should wenture tb talk such utter twaddle as he delivered himself of on Saturdaynight would be very properly booted 1 from the platform; Tuere is not one original remark, or one practical sug--1 gestion, in the whole of his speech, and we , are led to wonder why he should take the trouble to run about the Colony without any, special object ; : to serve, except pe.rbaps the gratification of his own vanity, pandered to as it is by the slavish adulation of the i unthinking, the weakminded, and the foolish. ;
