SPORTS AT BLACKS.
y(From oar Oorrropoudeot). The (ports at Black* on St 'Patrick’* Day, 17th March, waa a *ucce*». A large number of people, both old and young, with « fair share of ladies, *howed up on the ground, Mr P. Harrington kindly giving the Committee the use of hi* paddock. The weather was all that could be desired for sports, eta ■ ’ The events on the whole, if not up to the mark, were well entered into, and each did hi* best to gain firct honours. In the wrestluigi (collar and elbow) only , two of the competitors seemed to .understand 4 the style, and they showed very little play. Tilting in the ring was something new here, and was well patronised, but 1 am of the opinion that it would be better for man and horse if they • ran on the outside, as there would then be. less possibility of the rider falling off, which happened to two of the competitors here. The tug of war was about the best event of the day, and caused more sport than all the rest. The Matakanui Councillor had all his men chosen ; not so our Councillor. He had to take what he could get on the ground, and light men at that. 1 felt for them after the tassel, for they were out of wind with the . hard fought honour of -carrying the same to tinkers. I hope we will be able to keep it next time Mr Boulton, the hoc. sea, deserves great credit for the efficient manner in which he -carried out bis duties from the beginning to the close. There will be£lo or £ll to the credit of the Committee to start the St. Patrick’s Day sports next year; and through his (Mr Boulton’s) kindness I forward the result of the various events. -Handicap Race (Boys under 15), 100 yards ; entry, Is.
