MINING NEWS.

In the Warden’s Court at Alexandra, on Monday last, a number of mining applications were heard, amongst them the following were of the greatest local interest:—An application by J. R. Kemp for a water race from Coal Creek, and terminating on the Obelisk Spur, was granted ; an application by R. J. Webb for a wa'er race from Coal Greek, taking in all tributaries of tbe north branch of the same, and terminating on the Obelisk Spur, was refused, it being Contended by the White’s Reefs Co. that some of the tributaries embodied in th° application were already held by that Company ; an application by the White’s Reef Co. for a water race, for two heads, from the east and west branches of Butcher’s Gully, and after traversing their claim, and terminating again in Butcher’s Gully, for quartz crushing purposes, was objected to by Messrs M‘Neil and others, the proprietors of the Caledonian water race, on the ground that their right would be injured, as the water would be defiled. The objection was overruled, and the application w»s granted. The very great interest displayed in the applications for rights in anyway connected with the Obelisk Spur shows that the reefs are thought something of, and that all the holders of claims are on the •alert,- and are guarding against any undue advantage being obtained by any one party. Since last week White’s company have sunk into the reef, the which looked welt so far as they went, but meeting with a good flow of water, they have for the meantime given up their shaft and are devoting their whole attention and energy to the deep level tunnel which is being out into the hill to strike the reef. This tunnel will give about 150 ft of backs, and moreover drain the reef The prospects of this company are most unmistakable improving. Lythgoe and Gray, Wookey and Gavan, and other claims are etill at work. The Advance started work during the week. To-night th« shareholders of two companies meet at Crossan’s hotel, when it ia expected they will order work to bo started.
