BLACKS.

(From our Correspondent). The weather has been most changeable here after two or three days of intense heat We have had a day of rain, but f am afraid it will do the farmers more harm than good. . The Library Committee met on the 21st inst., and after a great deal of talk wns postposed till the first Wednesday in February. 1 hope by that lime they will have screwed up their courage to more work and less talk. .... The annual meeting of the School Committee took' p ace on the 28th inst., to receive the report and elect a new committee. The report and balance-sheet were adopted as read. Mr J. C. Chappie asked a question which, almost amounted to a charge against the moral character of the teacuer. But as it may be a serious one I refrain from anyl comments at present. A strong committee was also formed at the same meeting to raise subscriptions for snorts of all sorts on the 17th of March. The committee consist of Messrs Bolton, Hyde, Macintosh, Gavan, Fitzgerald, Pitches, Barren, and Alexander, with power to add to their number. Messrs Fitzgerald, Dundas, and Power were empowered to canvas tor snbscriDtions. so I can fairly promise a good day’s sport. All the townships about here have their supply of water but ns (Ophir). and the late fires at Gavan’s and Mackintosh's ought to bj a warning to the townspeople to spare no efforts to get a good supply running in the street,, so that in case of fire breaking out they " will haveth means of coping with it. lam certain more property was consumed here than would bring a race in three times the cost of the one we would require for our township, not to speak of the benefit that would be derived by having the water for household purposes and to irrigate gardens. I am of opinion it could be got in if we would tax ourselves like other towns, and pay a water rate at the same rate or valuation of property as the County; and perhaps Mr Editor you can give os some hints upon the suoject.
