THE STRANGE AND PREVAILING DISEASE OF THIS COUNTRY. Like a thief at nigkt, it steals in on ns unawaraes. Many persons have pains about the chest ami sides, and sometimes in the bock. They feel dull ami sieepy ; the mouth has a bad taste, especially in the morning A sort of sticky slime collects snout the teeth. The appetite is poor. There is a feeling like a heavy load on the stomaoli ; sometimes a faint all-gone sensation at the pit ot the stomach which mod does no- satisfy. The eyes are sunken, the hands and feet become cold and clammy. After a while a cougli sets in, at first dry, but after a few mouths it is attended with a greenish coloured expectoration. The afflicted ones feels tired all the while, and shop does not seem to afford any nst. After a time he becomes nervous, irritahf , and gloomy, and has evil forebodings. There is a giddiness, a sort of whirling sensation in the head when rising up suddenly. The bowels become c -stive ; the skin is dry and hot at times ; the blood becomes thick and stagnant, the whites of the eyes oeeomes tinged with yellow, tho mine is scanty and high-coloured, depositing a sediment af..«r standing. There is frequently a snitung up of the food,-sometimes with a sour tasto, and sometimes with a sweetish taste ; this is frequently alien led with palpitation of the heart; tho vision becomes impaired, with spots before tho eyes ; there is a feeling of great prostration and weakness. All of these symptoms are in turn present. It is thought thatjnearly one-third of our population iias tins disease in some of its varied forms. It has been found that medical men have mistaken the nature of this disease. Some have treated it for liver complaint, some for dyspepsia, others’ for kidney disease, etc , etc., but none of .the various kinds of treatment have been attended with success.
