CLYDE WATER SUPPLY.
Engineer’s Report. Vincent County Offices, Clyde, July 24th, 1883. The Chairman Vincent Comity Council. I have the honour to report in connection with this subject that I have inspected Holt’s race from which the present supply is drawn, and also the country generally, fronxthe Wai-keri-k ri Gorge downwards, with the view of e«timating the piohab’e cost of a new race from that point to ihe top of the Terraco, immediately behind the township. I have also made enquiries of the Manager of the Golden Ga e Rice Company for the purpose of ascertaining whether his Company could supply the necessary water, or would allow ihe Council to run a head of water of thtir own in their race, and the result of these enquiries will be recorded further on.
Ist. The pres nt Water Supply This is taken from a race known as Holt’s, which takes its rise in the Wai keri ken Creek, a*, the mouth of the Gorge. At th s pni-it the water is no doubt of the best quality 0 tain able, and if it could be delivered in the town.-hip in the same state nothing more could be desired as far as quality or qipntity is concerned. It is, however, contaminated to such an extent during its passage to the township as to make it quite unfit for domestic purposes, and especially for 1 -rinking. Within a j of a mile of the bead there is a stable not more than 10 or 12ft. from the banks. It is on slightly sloping ground, and a drain is cut from the doorway into the race, leading the urinal and other matter directly into it. At the time 1 inspected, there was also a large heap of manure piled up against the wall, its outer edge not being more than a foot or two from the water. A little further down the race runs through Keleher’s cow yard, and is there defiled in much the same manner. Within the boundaries of the town the race passes just beneath a slaughter yard. The yard is ou the slope of the Terrace, ft'bl consequently ’’uring heavy rain a large quantity of filth and noxious matter must of necessity bo washed into it. Added to all.thi i. the race is unfenced ; cattle feed on (t, their droppings ore carried down it, and
-inAhe-apwog oTithe yeSC-lt is generally-this oise that t>"o or three die in it. No analysis has been made of the water, but i’ this should be done ( feel sure that it would prove that there is a large quantity of organic and'vegetable matter held in HUH|iensi.iii, enough to make it quite unfit ( for the n qtiirod purpose 1 2‘id.' Other mean* iff Supply — ln dealing , with this part of the subject I assume, in t accordance with Mr Wilson’s written j opinion, that the sale of the bead of waie- j by Mr Holt to the Corporation was an absolute sale, and being so, that the successors ro the Corporation have the right to divert ’hit hj ad of water in any manner or direction they please. Should this assump- J tion be correct, then a head of water may , be brought to top of Terrace at the back of th« Township in two ways Ist A new r ice ] altogether may lie made from the ra -nth of 1 the Wai keri-keri Gorge, wbio'i will com- 1 mind the top of the Terrace. 2nd. 1 Arrangements may be made with the ! Go den Gate Company to ran the head of , water in their race, iu which case only one ’ mile and a-half of new race would be ! require I. 3rd. Failing eilhi-r of hese the rignt to the head of water iu Holt’s rac * * may lie abandoned, and a fresh arrangement , made with the Golden Gate Company, by 1 which they will undertake to supply a ‘ head of wa'er The first plan would entail ? the construction of about eight mil- s of j race, at a cost of about £3OO. Tne other j two plans I am Unable to give any estimate for, as the cost won! ■ depend on -he arrange- [ m«nt made wkh the Company. Iu either ‘ case the 14 miles of race would cost .? about LSO. The second plan is obviously 1 the least costly, but I am unable to say ( positively whether such an arrangement ' could be made. 1 would recommend that J ♦he manager be communicated with officially, J so that he may lay the matter before his company. In regard to the 3rd, plan, the 1 manager expressed his willingness to supply ) the water as soon as the race was con- J ■truoted, Up to this point 1 have confined * myself to the questfon of bringing water to * the top of the terrace, but should this be done ' 1 presume that the supply will be distri- f buted by means of pipe o , and 1 have there ( f >re to report 011 a scheme and its probable ’ cost as todows ! - From the top of the ter- : race I would propose to construct an open pitched channel to a point on the slope ‘ abut 200f. above the level of the township. ' At this point there is a natural basin, and I would here construct a reservoir or dam | capable of holding about 80.000 gallons of 1 water, which would he equivalent to a two c months supply at 60 gallons per day per * head of population. From the reservoir ' pipes would ne laid down to the township 1 and the various streets, aod in my estimate ’ I have allowed for 100 chains of these. Provision will also be made for branches, ! tire-plugs, valves, etc., but not for sendees. . The probable coat of such a soneme would 1 b.,- ; -60 tons 4 + fin pipes, branches, lire p n-a, valves, etc,, at ,
This estimate is based on the supposition that the pipes, etc,, are imported direct; if this should not be done they would c.ist about L 3 per tun more. L. D. Macoeoege, County Engineer. Statement op Revenue from, and expenditure 'in the Town of Clyde since IT BECAME MERGED IN THE COUNTY.
