BLACKS.
(From our Own Correspondent). The late hdl in aid of the school funds, given by our local Quadri le Assembly, wa> a very i-njovable affiir. I believe as many as six sets were on the floor at oue time. A strange thing for a ball here, only one married la y put in an appearance. The young peo -le enjoyed themselves thoroughly. A vert.hcless. the Quidrille Assembly will not, however, be able to give the School Committee as much eish'as time hoped to, owing to there only being 56 present. 1 hear that a Christy Minstrel troupe is to he formed here, and that they will give a concert in about seven or ••ieh weeks fiom now, in aid of the Backs Cricket Club. R will, I believe, be a pretty strong troupe, and I wish ill.on every success Our Postmaster and Telegraphist. Mr J. Alexander has, or is .about to get, leave of absence for a time, and I am sure he has e irned i , he hiving been in Ihe office si : co is was lirst opened, about S years. He has the good wishes of 99 persons out of every hundred, and he baa made many friends about here by his Con. eous conduct as a public officer and citizen. By the bye, I wonder what has been a e of our Library Committee. They hive never had a meeting this year that I have heard of. Our Library books are, L believe, getting lost and are scattered all round the County. 1 topi the Committee will wake up and tiy and get some of the money that is voted for public libraries, and wi hj the 1 a 'lice, teat they have nr ought to have in hand, they could add i f w more vol-.. and perhaps get a few mo en embers to join. 1 hj >pe they will take this friendly hint. While remindiii. local committees of their duties, I would like to say that 1 think it is a great pity the Church >f England Committee do not remove 'heirharmonium from the Schonlhouse It is a source of envious jealously to a band of amateurs an 1 strongminded females, affecting them so strongly as to cause them to gros-ly insult an inestimable lady, who through severe illness, was forced to remain away with the key one Sunday. 1 see by the order paper of the. Vincent County Council that Or. Stronach lias tabled a motion that the Tinkeis Sludge Channel be subsidised £ f -r £ to the extent of LIOO to keen it in proper order. It being a necessary work 1 hope that he will be sue o-ssful. 1 would here recommend that Cr. Pithes do the same to keep our sludge channel irr order, as it is going to ruin, and I give it as the opinion of sever a mine; s about that if it was in proper working order we would have several more claims working and more miners located on 111 flat. It is a pity that more interest is not taken in the sludger channel, on whiqji .the Government have already spent over LIOOO. I ant of opinion that some of the money voted brimming purposes could bo obtained without much difficulty, as it would be a public benefit. I remember hearing at a conceit here a Ideal piece dealing with the County Council, part of which ran - “ She makes qur roads, our streets, our ditches, All at a wink fr in Councillor Pitches.” So that 1 hope he will wink very hard to obtain this boon for us.
