Auckland, September 10. A chess tournament, in aid of St. Andrew’s building fund, at the Opera House, drew a crowded audience. There were over 50 performers in elegant dross which cost L3OO. The boy Hughes, son bf Mr Hughes, solicitor, is now likely to recover from the effects of the recent shooting accident, the marble having been extracted from the tissues bf his back. September 11. On the Zealandia’s arrival to-day the doteotives arrested Cornelius Riordan by mis- ■ take for Patrick lliordan, for whom a warrant from Melbourne was out tor fraudulent bankruptcy. Ho was discharged at the the Police Court to-day, Superintendent Thomson stating ho believed the prisoner’s brother who had gone to America, was the defaulter. Patrick Riordau’s wife was also a passenger by the steamer. They left by the Zealaudia for San Francisco. Messrs W. Redmond and Walsh arrived by the Zealaudia. Their movements are undecided yet, but they will probably leave by (the Taraweraon Thursday for the South, going, it is said, to Dunedin direct. New Plymouth, September 11 Thos. Heir, charged with attempting to obtain an insurance policy by certain false pretences, was committed to tako his trial at the next sitting of tha Supremo Court The accused s lauds committed for trial by the coroner for arson. Napier, September 10, A patient in the Lunatic Asylum dreamed that ho had, bit off one. of his little fingers. When he woke he found ho had actually acted upon ids dream, and the finger was lying at the side of his bed. Nelson, Sept 11. A headless body was found on the 'sands this morning, near the residence of Mr Green, by one of bis sons. The waistcoat, shirt, trousers, and boots are on the body. The remains are evidently thbao of Reader, drowned four weeks ago in the pilot boat catastrophe. The boots on the body have, been recognised by the man who made them for Reader. An inquest will be hold. Christchurch, September 10. August 7, 1883 : •' By repeated protests 1 acquired a few definite righ s. Many cases of interference I bad-to submit to without protest. 1 have more than onoe been on the point of appealing to the whole body of Governors for consideration of ti state of things which was becoming intolor-able”-r-the Board, desiring to ascertain particulars of the alleged cases of Interference, instructed the Registrar to write to Mr Miller requesting him to state in writing (1) What “definite rights” Mr Miller acquired by “ repeated protests,” and when the protests were made ; (2) particulars of 'tho “ many cases of interference” Mr Miller “ had to submit to.” At the meeting of the same body two notices of motion were given—one proposing that- arrangements should be made for transferring the care of the public library from the Governors to the City Council; and. the other for transferring the care ot the Boys and Girlq’ .High Schools to some other body. Timaru, September 11. A child named Ellis, three years of age, was drowned in tho river at Silvcrstream yesterday while playing with other children., , : Invercargill, September 11. Tho inquest was resumed yesterday «n Hie body of the infant lately found at Woodlands. No additional evidence was forthcoming, and the Jury returned the following verdict:—“Thatjtho body of the said male child was found in some water, with marks of violence thereon, but how or by what means it came to its death is to the jurors unknown.
