(From our own Correspondent). August 13th. The hard frost has at length broke up. and this evening we are hiving a steady downpour of rai.i. Lost time in the claims this winter has been between two and three weeks. The winter, token as a whole, has been a fine one. A little, more now would give a better prospect for mining ope atious during the coming summer, but we may get it yet. Mr W. Burnett, of the Hawkdun Station, is leaving the district, and the in habitants of this place and neighbourhood have publicly t stilled to rhe esteem in which bo hj himse f and wife are held by presenting them wi’h an illuminated address, Mr Burnett his been brought in contact with this place nrine.ipally as lay reader for the Church of E igla >.I, in which capacity be viriied ranntli'y. generally ac comoanied by Mrs Burnett,, whose musical accomplishments qreat'v assist d in the rendering of the beautiful service of the church. Mr Burnett’s meetings have always been well attended, but yesterday being his last, visit the atten lance was large, and at the dose of the service Mr W. Tliur'ow, on behalf df the inhabitants, pre sen ted him wilh the address before ment one b Foi some years the children attendiug '’ambrims pnb’io school have been annually ente tained at the Hawkdcn! starion by Mr and Mrs Barnett, and the 11 le ones will not soon forget, ■ their kind friends. M r Burnett’s services were at the disposal of the public in the assistance of any deserving object. The departure of such men is a loss to any locality, and more so when there is so few of them in it. Scarlet fever has been prevalent here during the most of the winter, but in a very mild form. The School Committee el. sed the school for some weeks, a precaution which many considered unnecessary. It is always better, however, to err ■ m the site of safety. There is now a fall a tendance at school, and there has not been a case of fever for about three weeks.
