FEARFUL GALE.

On the east coast of Tasmania one of the severest gales experienced for some time prevailed on the 13th July. It came from the west, and was accompanied with most tei rifle squalls, which ladled the water into sheets of spiay. At the Junction a frightful accident occurred, whereby two women were killed. The wife anu two daughters, Lucy and Adelaide, ol Ambrose Harrington, a miner working at the Anchor Liu Mining Company, left their house at the Junction to gather firewood. They had proceeded only some 80yds. from the place when a tree, about Ibiu. in diameter, suddenly came down, and the boughs caught Mrs Harrington and Adelaide Harrington betore they could get out of the way. The. other daughter, Lucy, escaped with a slight hurt. She immediately ran screaming to her lather, who happened to he at home, and he, with Mr S tadpole, manager of the Anchor Alluvial Company, proceeded to the spot They had to cat away the boughs to reach the women, who were found to be both quite dead. On examination it was seen that the bodies were frightfully mutilated. Ibe skulls ol both were split in twain, the buiins of the girl being scattered about ; the woman’s chest was smashed in, and the girl’s right leg crushed to pieces. The ketch Starling was driven on the rocks at Bicheno and became a total wreck. All hands were saved, but it is feared the cargo will all be lost.
